New Delhi: A human chain in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), is to be formed around the iconic Red Fort in the national capital, on the occasion of Martyrs Day on Thursday, according to media reports.
Jamia Milliastudents said that they would lead a protest march against CAA and NRC from their university campus to Rajghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Delhi Police, however, said that there was no official permission to carry out a march from Jamia to Rajghat.
The Delhi police have further pointed out that Thursday being Martyrs' Day, Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary and would draw a number of VVIP visitors to Raj Ghat. President of India, Ramnath Kovind, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu and other VVIPs have already visited the Rajghat memorial to pay their respects to the Father of the Nation.
The Delhi police are being cautious in the matter of protests rallies also because of violence which marred demonstrations against CAA recently in Seelampur and around Jamia Millia campus in the national capital. Subsequently, the Jawaharlal Nehru Campus (JNU) in the capital witnessed scenes of violence.
Meanwhile, down south, Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to lead a CAA protest rally in his constituency in Kerala on Thursday.
