After the COVID-19 outbreak, the fourth batch of 53 Indians comprising one teacher and 52 students have been brought back from Iran, one of the worst affected countries in the world. The Union Minister of External Affairs. Dr S. Jaishankar posted a tweet revealing this development, in the early hours of Monday. He thanked the Iranian authorities and the Indian team for the successful evacuation of the fourth batch.

So far 389 Indians have been in all and many more are likely to be evacuated in the days to come.

In Iran, the number of infected individuals has been rising sharply. The medical system in the country has been overloaded. Iran has reported 611 deaths and 12,729 COVID-19 confirmed cases as on Sunday, March 15.

The government has advised Indians abroad to stay in the countries where they are at the moment, but in the case of Iran, most students and others had no place to stay. Universities have shut down and there is no accommodation for the stranded students, they said.

The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had on Friday, written to several world leaders including PM Modi, over how US sanctions had impacted his government's fight against COVID-19.

Rouhani pointed out in his letter that combating COVID-19 calls for strengthening collaborative and coordinated regional and international measures. Referring to COVID-19, the Iranian President wrote that the "virus knows no boundary and claims victims without political, religious, ethnic, and racial considerations."
