New Delhi: As polling got underway, women voters could be seen coming out in large numbers in many booths. It is widely seen that the large voter base of women adding up to about 67 lakhs in Delhi is the key to victory. As polling got underway, women voters could be seen coming out in large numbers in many booths.

The AamAadmi party (AAP) has been ahead of the other parties in working women. Free Metro rides, free water and electricity supply and its emphasis on school education and healthcare, are big-ticket bonus points in its favour, as AAP sees it.

The AAP has prominent candidates like Atishi Marlena pushing its campaign, while spokespersons like Preeti Sharma Menon provide excellent studio support, articulating the party's agenda.

The BJP with lawyer MP Meenakshi Lekhi and the Congress with its Chandni Chowk candidate, Alka Lamba are other notable figures campaigning for their parties. All parties have been focussing on women voters with the full knowledge that they can tip the scales.

About a third of Delhi's population is believed to benefit from free electricity supply. Similarly, AAP's free water supply is another big incentive aimed at women. Predictably, women end up as important influencers in the decision as a result of such freebies.

The Shaheen Nagar protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a demonstration led by women. From the time that polling commenced in Shaheen Nagar, women showed up in large numbers to exercise their franchise. It remains to be seen however, whether Shaheen Nagar, which has been turned into a major poll plank by the BJP, will cast its shadow on the eventual outcome.
