Srinagar: National Conference leader and former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir is likely to be released on the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir Administration, according to media reports. It was reported that the government has issued orders revoking his detention.

Omar Abdullah was detained on August 5, 2019 at the time of scrapping of Article 370. Recently, his father, former J & K chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was released.

Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah were kept in detention at the time of abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was also detained along with them. Speculation is rife that Mufti may soon be released.

Opposition leaders had been demanding the release of all three former chief ministers. The issue was raised in both houses of Parliament as well.

Omar Abdullah's release also symbolises a return to normalcy as perceived by the establishment. It was being argued that he could influence others against the measures being taken by the Centre. Farooq Abdullah, after his release, told media persons that he would attend parliament and raise issues related to Jammu and Kashmir.

Article 370 was abrogated by the Narendra Modi government in August 2019 and the state of Jammu and Kashmir bifurcated into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
