As the day (January 30) marks the death anniversary of the father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, India celebrates it as the Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Divas. The day is meant to pay homage to the Freedom fighters who lost their lives for the independence India. It is a known fact that Nathuram Godse assassinated Gandhi on January 30, 1948, for the Partition of the country.

On the other hand, Martyrs' Day is also observed on March 23 to remember the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar and mourn for their death.

Going by the life of our father of the nation, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869, in Gujarat's Porbandar, Gandhi pursued his higher education in England. Later, he came back to India to lead the freedom struggle against British rule. He followed "ahimsa" method to take on British with the non-violent protests. After a series of battles, India finally attained Independence on August 15, 1947.

The President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Defence Minister and the three Service Chiefs of India pay homage to the Father of the Nation and all the martyrs who gave their lives for the nation on every January 30.
