Guwahati: Authorities are reportedly attempting to check if "ineligible persons" have been included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. Six months ago, the authorities had published the final list relating to Assam.

Media reports say that officials are trying to verify whether 'ineligible persons' had made it to the list before it is forwarded for formal notification by the office of the Registrar- General of India. The NRC state coordinator Hiresh Dev Sarma has reportedly asked Deputy Commissioners of all the 33 districts in the state to furnish details of "ineligible persons" whose names might have been included in the NRC.

Categories of people who will be checked include:

  • • Doubtful voters (DV)
  • • Declared foreigners (DF)
  • • People having cases pending in Foreigners' Tribunal (PFT)
  • • Descendants of DV, DF and PFT.

As per the directions of the Supreme Court, names of people in these four categories would be withheld and would not be included in the final NRC list.

Incidentally, the BJP had been saying that the NRC exercise conducted in Assam should be run through a process of re-verification. The BJP stated that the final list was flawed. Its claim was supported by a number of many civil society groups, some of whom include the main petitioners in the Supreme Court.

After getting a formal notice in the matter, the 19 lakh individuals who have been left out in the list, will get 120 days to reapply in the Foreigners Tribunal.
