A pregnant migrant labourer who was walking all the way from Maharashtra to her village in Madhya Pradesh gave birth along the way, rested for two hours after the delivery, and then continued to walk for another 150 km, the news agency ANI reported.

The pregnant migrant worker and her husband started walking from Nashik in Maharashtra towards their home in Satna of Madhya Pradesh. The woman experienced labour pains on Tuesday during her long walk to Satna. Her husband is quoted as saying that after she gave birth they rested for two hours and then walked for another 150 km.

The Block Medical Officer at Satna is reported to have said that the administration had arranged a bus for them. The authorities concluded after necessary health check-ups that both mother and the baby are doing fine.

On the one hand, the Centre in coordination with state governments has arranged Shramik Special trains for migrant labourers stranded in various parts of the country. On the other, migrants continue to struggle to board the special trains and many of them prefer to walk their way home often covering hundreds of kilometres.

The issue of migrant labourers has occupied the centre-stage of political discourse as well. The Congress and other Opposition parties have accused the Modi government of being insensitive to the suffering of migrants stranded in various parts of the country who wish to return home. Congress leaders said that they are hoping the Finance Minister would announce some economic relief for migrant labourers in her interaction with the media on Wednesday.
