New Delhi: Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Monday demanded the Narendra Modi government to make public the list of 50 top wilful defaulters in the country. Seeking a response from the government in his written query, Rahul Gandhi sought to know the names of the country's top 50 defaulters (those who have taken loans and have not paid them).

Speaking against the background of the Yes Bank debacle, the Wayanad MP said that banks were continuing to fail. The Union Minister of State for Finance, Anurag Thakur responded to Rahul Gandhi's question stating all the deposits of Yes Banks were secured. Thakur also pointed out that the bank was being restructured.

The Narendra Modi led government had effectively brought down the scale of the debt burden which was left behind by Congress and was taking firm action against fugitives, he clarified. Thakur also pointed out that the names of the top defaulters were listed on the website and were there for all to see. The names of any defaulter who owes a bank over Rs.25,00,000 was displayed on the website, he added.

The Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, then staged a walk-out claiming the party was not satisfied with the minister's response.

Former Union minister and Congress leader, P. Chidambaram lashed out at the Modi government for looking the other way when banking failures dogged the economy and COVID-19 crisis gripped the world. Instead, the government was focusing on manufacturing crises in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, he added in a tweet.
