New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asserted that the rule of law is supreme in India. PM Modi was addressing the International Judicial Conference here.

Gandhi Ji emphasised the rule of law and ancient Indian scriptures also stressed upon this, he said. Thousands of years of history bear this out. Rule of law is a part of India's social conduct, PM Modi said.

Referring to the fact that India preaches gender justice, the prime minister reminded the audience that India was among the first countries to ensure voting rights to women.

PM Modi pointed out that some historic judgements had been passed in recent days and 1.3 billion people of India accepted the authority of law. He said that law and justice what are the cornerstones of the Indian Constitution. Any change in our system should be rational and stand the test of law, he said.

The rule of law has been advanced by our judiciary as well as our legislatures, he pointed out. PM Modi reminded the audience that each institution had always respected the authority of the other.

The Prime Minister remarked that about 1500 obsolete laws had been scrapped. Several new laws have replaced them including ones based on gender equality, justice to transgenders and permanent commission to women in the army. The government offers 26 weeks of maternity leave to women, he added.

PM Modi observed that the government is trying to simplify the process of forming the national judicial data grid. He also hailed the Supreme Court for striking a healthy balance between development and the environment.
