Local favourite: Ash Barty
World No. 1 Ash Barty lost to 25th seeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals. The local favourite was chasing his career’s 2nd major title, having won the Roland Garros in 2019.
Dominic Thiem
The World No. 3 Thiem, who is tipped to be the future star, lost to 18th seeded Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets in the 4th round. Thiem finished as runner’s up last year in Australia, while he had ended the year by claiming his maiden major title – the US Open.
Rafael Nadal
After going two sets up against Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals, the World No. 2 Nadal ended up losing the next three sets to bow out of the tournament. It was a great chance for Nadal to win the tournament and pip Roger Federer’s aggregate of 20 Grand Slam titles.
