IPL 2021: 5 players who can lead Delhi Capitals in Shreyas Iyer’s absence

Shreyas Iyer out of IPL 2021
Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the IPL 2021 because of an injury. He dislocated his left shoulder during the 1st ODI vs England on March 23.
Led Delhi to final last year
Under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, Delhi played their first-ever IPL final last year. Unfortunately, Delhi’s dream run ended with a loss to Mumbai Indians in the final.
DC will miss Iyer, the batsman too
Shreyas Iyer ended IPL 2020 with 519 runs, second highest for Delhi and overall, fourth highest after KL Rahul Shikhar Dhawan, and David Warner.
Rishabh Pant
Pant is the vice-captain of Delhi Capitals and ideally, he should be handed the captaincy in Iyer’s absence. “Team promoters, the head coach will take the final call on who will lead us but obviously Rishabh Pant being the vice-captain should be the automatic choice,” a source close to Delhi was quoted, as saying in an interview.
Ajinkya Rahane
Rahane is among the senior players at Delhi Capitals and is certainly one of the stronger candidates to receive the responsibility. He led Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2018 and 2019 but does not have a great record. So far, he has won only 36% of the matches as captain in the tournament.
Ravichandran Ashwin
India’s ace spinner, Ashwin, attempted captaincy in the IPL while his stint with Punjab Kings. But, even he did not taste much success. In 2018, Ashwin’s Punjab finished 7th and the following season, the team finished 6th. He won 12 out of the 28 matches in charge. Given his experience in the field, he could be considered to replace Shreyas in IPL 2021.
Prithvi Shaw
After being dropped by Team India, Shaw went to the domestic circuit to revive his run. After Shreyas' departure for national duty, Shaw took charge of Mumbai and captained them to the title win in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, the ball does not seem in Shaw’s court as he had a terrible IPL season last year, where he scored just 228 runs in 13 innings at 17.53.
Shikhar Dhawan
Dhawan scored over 600 runs last IPL and finished as the second leading run-scorer. Even though Dhawan has captained in the IPL only on a stand-in basis, Delhi could hand him the captain’s armband and give him more responsibility, since he is one of the senior players in the whole tournament.
