IPL 2022 ‘It hit me when I lost captaincy,’ David Warner opens up on SRH exit
David Warner in SRH
With 4,014 runs in 95 matches at an average of 49.55, David Warner finished his SRH career as their best-ever batter. He captained SRH to the IPL title in 2016.
Leading run scorer
Warner is SRH’s leading run-scorer as he has over 1,500 runs more than second-placed Shikhar Dhawan.
Forgettable 2021 season
Warner, who had a poor 2021 season with the bat, was stripped off the captaincy. He was not even picked in all the matches in the second phase of the tournament.
Warner felt he didn’t have to make a statement
"Last year, it hit me when I lost the captaincy in the Indian Premier League. I thought I could go back the old way, look at my stats. I believe that I didn't have to comment or do anything like that post that," he said on ‘The Brett Lee Podcast’.
SRH released Warner
Ahead of the mega auction, SRH unsurprisingly released David Warner. The Orange Army retained Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad and Umran Malik.
"When you play T20 cricket in Indian conditions, it cooks your body and taxes your legs. You see, Maxwell's IPL last year, he was cooked after three overs. If you are playing 14 games in the space of 60-70 days with training in between, you can't physically prepare for that."
Warner: I had 7 days to prepare when I arrived for IPL
"I had seven days to prepare when I first arrived for the IPL. I would be in the sauna for 10 minutes and then run a kilometre on the treadmill and repeat the same. That was the only way I could prepare for the conditions and I've done it pretty much every time I've gone for the IPL."
T20 World Cup: Player of the Tournament
Following a miserable run in the IPL 2021, Warner revived his form for Australia at the T20 World Cup. He finished with 289 runs in 7 matches and was named the Player of the Tournament as Australia lifted their maiden title.
Bidding War!
It goes without saying that there will be a bidding war among the franchises to secure Warner, who is the fifth leading run-scorer in the tournament.
