India's badminton star Sindhu defeated China's He Bing Jiao to win bronze medal in women's singles category on Sunday.
Back-to-back medals
After winning the silver medal at Rio Games in 2016, she won bronze in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. She was only the fourth women's singles player to clinch a medal at successive Olympics after Susi Susanti (gold in 1992 and bronze in 1996), Bang Soo-Hyun (silver in 1992 and gold in 1996) and Zhang (gold in 2004 and 2008).
Double Olympic medalist
Sindhu, who now has two Olympic medals, became the first Indian woman to achieve it. Overall, she was the second double Olympic medalist of India after wrestler Sushil Kumar.
Joint world record
Sindhu has now won a total of 7 medals at the World Championships and Olympics, which is the joint-most for a woman's singles player, tied with China's Zhang Ning. She has 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze at the Worlds, apart from her two Olympic medals.
Did not drop a game
Sindhu didn't drop a single game at this year's Olympics in the four matches that she won. In the semi-final against Tai Tzu Ying, Sindhu's only loss in the tournament, she lost in straight games.
Sindhu in 2021
Leading up to the Olympics, Sindhu had featured in as many as 5 tournaments, failing to win even a single title. She had qualified to the final of just one tournament – the Swiss Open, which she lost to her arch-rival Carolina Marin.
