Turkey’s Merih Demiral netted an own goal at the 53rd minute, handing a 1-0 lead to Italy at Rome’s biggest sports facility Stadio Olimpico on Friday. A Euros tournament kickstarted with an own goal for the first-ever time in its history.

Ciro Immobile, who plays for Serie A club Lazio, scored the second goal for Italy a few minutes after the own goal. The Stadio Olimpico is known territory for Immobile as it is Lazio’s home ground, making his goal even sweeter.

As soon as Immobile scored, he and his teammates ran to celebrate with the fans returning to the stands after more than a year of battling the coronavirus. “Seeing the fans celebrate after all this time was wonderful, we finally got to come together after so long of this damned virus,” Immobile said after the win.

Immobile set up the third and final goal as Napoli forward made a clean finish to net Italy’s third goal of the game.

The Azzuri scored three goals in a single game at the European Championship for the first time ever. “We played well. With it being the first match, it wasn't easy and we were up against a good team. The crowd helped us, and it was crucial for us to move the ball quickly,” Italy head coach Roberto Mancini said after the game on Friday.
