Hyderabad: The mortal remains of legendary Telugu cinema icon Akkineni Nageswara Rao were consigned to flames on Thursday amid police honours as scores of fans, political leaders and members of film fraternity bade him an emotional farewell.
In the presence of eminent film personalities, politicians and fans, Rao’s sons and other family members lit the pyre at Annapurna Studios.
A sense of gloom enveloped the sprawling Annapurna Studios as the funeral cavalcade reached there. The buglers sounded the Last Post. Among those who attended the funeral were Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi, former Union Minister and Congress leader T Subbarami Reddy, State Ministers K V Krishna Reddy and D Nagender, D Rama Naidu, Venkatesh, Rajasekhar, Dasari Narayana Rao, Sridevi and Tabu. The body was taken in a flower-bedecked vehicle from Annapurna Studios to the Film Chamber office. The funeral procession which started from the Film Chamber passed through Jubilee Hills and returned to Annapurna Studios.
Popularly known as ANR, the 89-year-old recently completed shooting for his home production 'Manam' (us) which stars three generations of the family – himself, Nagarjuna and grandson Naga Chaitanya.
On a call given by MAA, the Telugu film industry remained shut on Thursday as a mark of respect to the legendary actor.
