A massive earthquake measuring 7.7 on the richter scale hit parts of North India and tremors were felt in parts of Delhi-NCR region.

The strong earthquake lasted almost a minute and was felt in parts of New Delhi on Monday, with buildings shaking in the centre of the Indian capital. According to reports, metro services have been halted in Delhi while phone lines are down in Srinagar due to the earthquake.

Tremors were also felt as far away as Islamabad in Pakistan and the Afghan capital Kabul, but not in neighbouring Nepal which was hit by a major quake in April.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 45km South-South West of Jarm in Afghanistan and 256km North of Kabul, according to USGS.

Hundreds of people raced from buildings onto the streets in Delhi while the quake was also felt in the Himalayan region of Kashmir.
