​Nizamabad: In a tragic accident, a mother and her five children were swept away in an overflowing rivulet in Nizamabad district on Saturday. The children are in the age group of 10 months-13 years. They included 10-month-old twins.

The accident happened when the car in which the mother and children were travelling. The car, while crossing the overflowing Pilli Vagu near Karegam, got washed away in the swirling waters.

The driver and another occupant managed to come out of the ill-fated car and were rescued by locals. The victims, who hailed from Kangti mandal in Medak district, were reportedly going to a hospital at Pitlam in the same district.

According to reports, the rains that lashed Nizamabad led to breaching of some tanks and lakes in the district. The incident took place between Karegaon and Gotegaon villages. The Pilli Vagu was flowing over the culvert and the local revenue officials stopped the plying of vehicles on the culvert. But, the driver of the car carrying the mother and children defied the officials and went ahead.

The gushing waters swept away the car. The car driver managed to jump out and reach to safety while the other occupants got washed away in the swirling waters.

The bodies of the mother and children were retrieved after the police and local people launched search operation.

The deceased were identified as Rajamani, Priya (7), Jyothi (4), twins Gnana Hasmitha and Gnana Samitha (10 months) and Geetamsa (13).
