“There is more awareness on organ donation and lots of people are positive towards it. Parents and relatives of a patient who is declared brain dead have come forward to donate his organs which were harvested in patients giving them a new lease of life,” said Nuero surgeon and Metro Super Specialty hospital managing director Dr N Venkata Srinivasa Rao.

Addressing the news reporters at their hospital here on Monday, Srinivasa Rao said that a serious case of head injury was admitted in hospital on May 20th. Attempts to save the patient went in vain and the parents came forward to donate his organs upon counseling. K Suresh (25) who hails from Mucherla village of Khammam district was badly injured in an accident which left him in serious head injuries. He was shifted to the hospital for better treatment but soon was declared brain dead. Both his eyes and kidneys along with Liver were donated.

Kidneys were sent to Arun Kidney Centre and Sunrise Hospitals each while Liver was sent to Manipal Hospitals. The eyes were donated to Vasan Eye Bank. The incident is another example of how human body’s organs can give life to many in need. About 90 per cent of deaths due to organ failure can be prevented if there are more donors, added Dr Srinivasa Rao.
