Matru Bhashodyama Vedika in a statement here on Wednesday demanded implementation of Telugu medium at primary level in all the schools for the protection of the mother tongue.

Expressing concern over the foisting of English language over the children at a tender age, the Vedika, which was formed with the members of Telugu Bhashodyama Samakhya and Andhra Pradesh Vidya Parirakshana Samiti and other educationists, stated that the government should withdraw the GO No 14 issued on January 2 which was intended to remove Telugu medium in the municipal schools and introduce English medium.

Members of Vedika, Dr Samala Ramesh Babu, Dr S R Parimi, MLC Vithapu Balasubrahmanyam, D Ramesh Patnaik and Prof Garapati Umamaheswara Rao stated in the statement that it was not proper on the part of the government to promote English at the cost of Telugu. Though the implementation of the GO No 14 is postponed to the next year after several civil society organisations protested against it, the government did not withdraw the GO. They demanded withdrawal of the GO immediately.

They also demanded the Telugu should be made compulsory in all the government and private schools all over the State at primary level by enacting a law to that effect. The Telugu medium should be continued in the high schools, they demanded. The educationists demanded the government to announce its language policy in the education sector immediately.

The Vedika is planning a protest demonstration on February 19 at the Dharna Chowk near Alankar talkies in Vijayawada to bring their demands to the notice of the government. They appealed to the lovers of Telugu language to participate in the demonstration in large numbers.
