Mallapragada Srimammarayana Murthy, former principal of Jillelamudi Oriental College, said that Telugu is one of the sweetest languages in the country with a vast literature and history. He was the chief guest at the International Mother Tongue Day observed at Maris Stella college on Tuesday.

Addressing the students and the staff, he said that one should not forget the Mother tongue wherever they go. He also said that UNESCO had declared February 21 as International Mother Tongue day and all states and countries observe this Day as the Mother Tongue Day. He quoted some important events from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata to mark the occasion.

Maris Stella College (MSC) principal Dr Kulrekha had given credit to the departments of Telugu, Hindi and Sanskrit of MSC to have organised the programme at the college seminar hall to mark International Mother Tongue Day here on Tuesday.

The main aim of this programme is to bring awareness and importance among students on mother tongue, she added. She said that every language has its own features and specialty and should be learned to achieve success in their lives.

The students have performed various cultural events which highlight the importance of Unity in Diversity. Dr D Ramakrishna, Dr P Usha, Dr VN Mangadevi, Dr Neeraja, Rajeswari, Jayabharathi and students of the college were present.
