East Godavari, a district with many credits in its account relating to various fields, is also becoming hub for tourism in the state.

The government conducted studies over the development of tourism sector and entrustedthe task to Andhra Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) to make the district as a tourist hub in the state.

There are abundant resources to develop many aspects of tourism such as river tourism, temple tourism, eco tourism inthe district. Themain source for river tourism in the district is river Godavari.

As river Godavari divides into Gowthami, VruddaGowthami, Vasita and Vainateya and finally flows out intothe Bay of Bengal near Antervedi, the abode of Lord Lakshmi Nrusimha Swamy. Basingon them, many canals were dug which also are a part of river tourism.

According to the APTDC executive director and Tourism department regional director G BhimaShankar Rao, the government is particular to develop river tourism in EastGodavari district like in Kerala. A Kerala based consultant company was asked tosubmit detailed project report in this regard.

At present Rs 10 crore worth of projects of river tourism are under progress in the district. Two jettis are coming up at Adurru and Pasarlapudi villages for the convenience of tourists to board and alight tourist boats, under Adurru and Pasarlapudi tourism circuit.

As many as six new house boats also are to be purchased in addition to the existing two houseboats at Dindi resorts in river Vasista. Haritha Coconut Resorts at Dindi on the banks ofriver Vasista was renovated to cater to the needs of tourists.

The 10 hours cruize in river Godavari between Rajamahendravaram and Papikondalu isattracting thousands of tourists across the country. Some boats are also operating fromBhadrachalam to Papikondalu. At present at about 50 boats are transporting the touriststo Papikondalu.

The century old Havelock Rail bridge on river Godavari between Rajamahendravaram andKovvuris becoming an impressive tourist spot. State government paid an amount of Rs 10crore to Railway Board for the bridge.

The four kms length of bridge will be developed as tourist spot with walking path,connectivity to the islands in the middle of river Godavari etc. The detailed project reportcomes shortly and the works will be commenced from Rajamahendravaram side, which canattract tourists.

APTDC is also developing Pichhikalanka in the middle of river Godavari, as a tourist centre. As part of it, the lanka was levelled to a height of 30 feet, with river sand in an area of 46 acres. Star category hotels,boat riding, convention centres, childrens games etc comes in thatarea.

The proposed Akhanda Godavari Project also strengthens river tourism. All the projectswill be given under Private Public Partnership (PPP) mode. East Godavari district will become a hub for river tourism in the future.
