Kolkata Police have employed 12 new customised Harley-Davidson Street 750s in their fleet to escort VIPs on special occasions. Prior to this, Royal Enfields were being used by the police force for over a decade and here is the reason why Kolkata Police shifted to the Harley brand.

The Harley-Davidson Street 750 with its twin-cylinder, 749cc engine is significantly faster and quicker than Royal Enfield’s single-cylinder engine. On paper, the Street 750 takes just 6.17 seconds for the 0-100 km/hr run while the Royal Enfields take 16 seconds. The Harley-Davidson Street 750 also has the added advantage of a higher top speed of 160 km/hr.

The Harley-Davidson Street 750s given to the police forces are customised units featuring saddlebags, flashers, sirens and in-built radios for communication. The pillion seats will get a cowl that allows for solo-riding only. The motorcycles also get new graphics and stickers with a Kolkata Police emblem on the windscreen.

Meanwhile, the police force is also considering to switch over to TVS Apaches from the Royal Enfields for executing regular duties. Three years back, Gujarat Police too, had procured seven Harley-Davidson motorcycles to pilot VIPs during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit.
