Rajamahendravaram: A two-day Temple Dance Festival commenced at Sri Venkateswara Anam Kala Kendram here on Saturday. The first day saw as many as 14 students dance to a composition inspired by Vaishnava Agama Sastra. In all, 30 students participated in the programme.

Participating in the dance festival, MP Maganti Murali Mohan emphasised the need to develop and encourage the ancient art form of temple dance. “Steps would be taken to promote temple dance,” he assured.

Eminent dance teacher Dr Sappa Durga Prasad of Nataraja Nrutya Niketan said that the dance was a custom since Tretayuga. “After visiting various temples in the country, the dance form was revived about two decades ago,” he added.

Nataraja Nrutya Niketan is the only institute in the country that trains students in temple dance. He appealed the government to extend its help to popularise the art form.
Nataraja Nrutya Niketan conducted the dance programme in association with the department of cultural affairs.
