Eluru: In-charge Collector P Koteswara Rao has directed the officials to conduct the Ugadi, the Telugu New Year Day reflecting the Telugu people’s tradition and culture.

He presided over the District Cultural Council meeting on Ugadi arrangements held at Collectorate here on Wednesday. Addressing the meeting, he said that the Ugadi festival celebrations would be conducted on March 18 (Sunday) at YMHA Hall under the joint aegis of the YMHA, the District Cultural Council, the State Creativity, the Cultural and Language Council.

The celebrations would start at 08.45 am on Sunday. Panchanga Sravanam, Veda Pathanam (reading of Veda), cultural activities and Kavi Sammelanam would be held. The Cultural Council would felicitate 20 artistes who extended their services to various cultural and art fields. They would be felicitated with memento, cash prize and shawl. Five Vedic Pundits would also be felicitated on the occasion.

He informed that 92 artistes applied for Ugadi Puraskarams to District Public Relations Office and a five-member committee headed by Assistant Director of I and PR would select eligible artistes.

Eluru Municipal Corporation Commissioner A Ramamohan Rao, Social Welfare Deputy Director Ranga Lakshmi Devi, Information and Public Relations Assistant Director V Bhaskara Narasimham, District Public Relations Officer K Subhashini, Cultural Council members Khaja Vali, Rasa Raju, Rayaprolu Bhagawan, Boddepalli Appa Rao, PV Narasimha Rao, Pedapati Ramakrishna, Garikapati Kalidasu, Duvvi Rama Rao Marapu Mallikharjun Rao participated in the meeting.
