Bapatla: Forum for Better Bapatla secretary PC Sai Babu said the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre hastened up the Indian freedom struggle and added that Bhagat Singh became a revolutionary after this incident.

The 99th anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre was celebrated under the aegis of Forum for Better Bapatla here on Friday. A two-minute silence was observed at Government Deaf and Dumb School to pay homage to the victims and also to Udham Singh.

Speaking on this occasion, he said that the massacre led to the launching of non-cooperation movement by Gandhiji and added that Ravindranath Tagore renounced his British knighthood as a mark of protest.

He said 99 years passed since the horrifying Jallianwala Bagh Massacre took place in Amritsar. The centenary would take place next year. It was one of the saddest events, in which 1,600 innocent and unarmed citizens were killed in the fire opened by General Dyer. Later, after two decades, Udham Singh took revenge.

He killed Punjab Governor Michael Dyer who gave orders for firing, on 13th March 1940 in London. He reminded that Udham Singh was hanged in July 1940 by the British government.
