She attended ‘Interface with the religious, caste and community leaders on prevention of child marriages and child trafficking and promotion of secondary education and job oriented vocational training’, held by the HELP- Girl Advocacy Alliance at MPDO office here on Thursday.

In the meeting with the religious and community leaders, teenage girls and representatives from voluntary organisations, Bharati said that religious leaders play a key role in control of child marriages. She said that they can create awareness in the public to conduct marriages of girls only after they complete 18 years.

The district child welfare officer, N Jyothi Supriya said that the religious and caste leaders should take the responsibility to create awareness on the child protection schemes in their vicinity.

The HELP NGO coordinator, K Ramesh said that the HELP- Girl Advocacy Alliance is working towards the prevention of child marriages and providing education to children.The participating religious leaders took an oath of prevention of child marriages coming to their knowledge. They announced that they would display boards and banners in the temples, churches and mosques against the child marriages.

They also promised to register all marriages they perform, with the local bodies and promote girl child education. About 30 members of religious leaders from Hindu, Muslim and Christian religions, women welfare organizations, HELP NGO programme officers BV Sagar, NVS Murthy, team members Devakumari and Sulochana also participated in the programme.
