Guntur: The transport department has been conducting various awareness programmes along with other measures to lessen road accidents. It was observing road safety week in April as more road accidents happening in April. The special awareness programmes on road safety were part of the exercise to mitigate accidents.

In a statement, the Deputy Transport Commissioner GC Raja Ratnam said that to create awareness about road safety, the department was conducting rallies, driving license melas, awareness meetings to the lorry drivers, eye tests to the drivers, vehicle checking, etc.

He announced that the department had allocated Rs 10 lakh to set up danger boards in spots identified with frequent road accidents. Every year, 1.43 lakh people were dying in the country in road accidents.

To set up trauma care centre in Narasaraopet, the RTA had allotted Rs 10 lakh. The department was enforcing helmet compulsory rule, because more youth die in the bike accidents. Those youth who were not wearing helmet had been involved in awareness and couselling sessions, he added.
