Vijayawada: World Lupus Day was observed here on Thursday. Lupus is a serious life-altering and fatal disease that requires in-depth understanding and support for the affected persons, said rheumatology specialist Nunna Kavya Devi.

Addressing a press conference here, she informed that about 15 cases of lupus were identified in the last 3 months in Vijayawada. Also called as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease which is on the rise in Andhra Pradesh and high in Vijayawada. She said that timely medication can control the effect of this disease.

As there was no cure for lupus, early diagnosis and treatment was only way to prevent the organ damage and mortality. The disease affects women than men with a 9:1 ratio, she added.

She explained that the most distinctive sign of lupus was butterfly-shaped rash on the face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose or rashes elsewhere on the body. The other symptoms were fingers and toes turn white or blue when exposed to cold, fever, joint pain, stiffness and swelling, skin lesions that appear or worsen with sun exposure (photosensitivity), shortness of breath, chest pain, dry eyes, headaches, confusion, weight loss and memory loss.
