It also become the basis for the more popular and widespread struggle for independence at the beginning of the 20th century. The 161st anniversary of First War of Indian Independence was celebrated here on Thursday under the aegis of Forum for Better Bapatla. Tributes paid to the martyrs of the movement.

Speaking on the occasion, Kumari said that most of its protagonists -- Mangal Pandey, Rani Jhansi Lakshmibai and Kunwar Singh-- became national heroes. “It is also popularly known as 'Sepoy Mutiny'. More than fifty British soldiers were killed by the sepoys and crowds,” she reminded.She said the mutiny was followed by popular revolts of civilian population.
The forum secretary, PC Sai Babu, NRGES APM Jayachandra and staff participated.
