Vijayawada: A rare and complex surgery was performed successfully on an 18-day-old baby girl at Andhra Hospitals, said Dr PV Rama Rao, head of Children’s Services here on Wednesday.

Addressing the media, Dr Rama Rao said an underweight baby with complex heart disease ‘Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage’ (TAPVD) was admitted to the hospital. In this disease the blood vessels that go to the heart were placed in abnormal position. He said this was one of the rare complex varieties of TAPVD.

On May 3, the operation was performed on the baby successfully. The 30-day-old baby was responding well and ready for discharge, he explained.

Dr Rama Rao said that they had performed about 27 TAPVD complex cardiac surgeries so far. He said the team effort of specialised doctors in the neonatology department of Andhra Hospital was behind the success, he added.

Dr Vikram said that about 7,000 children were born every year with complex heart diseases and about 200 children were undergoing surgeries. There were many reasons behind this heart disease like infections in pregnant women, malnutrition, diabetics, smoking and alcohol consumption.

Dr Dilip said that this was the only centre in AP where all types of neonatal heart surgeries being done, with back up support of tertiary level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, he added.Sreemannarayana, cardiologist, Ramesh, cardiac anesthetist and others were present.
