Ongole: The well known freedom fighter, former chairman of Rajahmundry municipal corporation, first chief minister of Andhra state and Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu is remembered on his 61st death anniversary on Sunday.

The minister for forests, environment, science and technology Siddha Raghavarao garlanded the bronze statue of Prakasam at the Prakasam Bhavan in Ongole and paid rich tributes. He said that though Prakasam pantulu was born into a poor family, he became barrister by hard work and love for education.

His daring action to stand opposite the British with bare chest brought him the title, Andhra Kesari, Lion of Andhras, said the minister. He said that after becoming a top leader in Congress party, Prakasam pantulu became the chief minister of Madras state and then Andhra state after bifurcation. He announced that the Andhra Pradesh government is taking inspiration from Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu and continue the spirit of his ideology.

Vadarevu Vinay Chand, collector of the Prakasam district said that Prakasam Pantulu born in the district and completed education. He said that Prakasam participated in various faorms of the freedom movement including the civil disobedience movement and stood opposite Simon commission with bare chest. He advised the public to take inspiration from him in patriotism and setting goals.

The MLC Karanam Balaram remembered Prakasam pantulu as the man who brought fame for the offices he held. He said that he is grateful for being elected as a member of parliament from Ongole and fortunate to keep his photograph in the lobby of parliament with the help of the then speaker GMC Balayogi.

He asked the present generation to follow the foot impressions of the freedom fighter and inspire from his words to serve the society.

The additional joint collector D Markandeyulu, Ongole Municipal commissioner S Venkata Krishna, Ongole MRO Chiranjeevi, revenue association representative KL Narasimharao, agriculture joint director Sriramamurthy, grandson of Prakasam pantulu T Gopala Krishna and other officials also participated in the program and paid tributes to Prakasam pantulu.
