Earlier in the day, Vijaya Shanti, who is a member of Lok Sabha, went to Parliament and attended the House. Vijaya Shanti, who has been suspended from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), has already signalled that she could join the Congress.
Film star-turned-politician Vijaya Shanti on Thursday called on Congress President Sonia Gandhi, triggering speculation of her impending entry into the Congress. Earlier in the day, Vijaya Shanti, who is a member of Lok Sabha, went to Parliament and attended the House. Vijaya Shanti, who has been suspended from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), has already signalled that she could join the Congress.
Former Union Minister Renuka Chowdhury was instrumental in taking Vijaya Shanti to meet Sonia Gandhi. However, Vijaya Shanti kept away from the media. It is likely that she may also meet AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh.
The Congress, which is upbeat after the decision on Telangana, has been further buoyed by the latest development. Not long ago, the TRS was aggressive and poached on the Congress, by managing to get former APCC President K Keshav Rao, besides G Vivekanand and Manda Jagannath, to join the TRS. At that point, the Congress was on a weak wicket and had to struggle hard to retain its flock together.
Now there is a dramatic turnaround in the political fortunes of the Congress. After the Congress Working Committee (CWC) decision on the formation of Telangana, the party has got into a stride. Vijaya Shanti indicating her desire to join the Congress may well trigger a new influx into the party both from the TRS and the YSRCP in Telangana, boosting the party’s poll prospects in the upcoming elections.
