New Delhi: Springing a major surprise, TDP leader Nandamuri Harikrishna on Thursday resigned from his membership of the Rajya Sabha, in support of the demand for keeping Andhra Pradesh united. In the morning, Harikrishna met Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari and personally handed over his resignation. Later, the Rajya Sabha Chairman accepted the resignation submitted by Harikrishna.

Harikrishna managed to steal a march over the other Seemandhra MPs by being the first to take the extreme step, which was also accepted. The Rajya Sabha Chairman enquired from Harikrishna the reasons for his taking the extreme step of resignation. Harikrishna said that he was committed to the ideals of his late father N T Rama Rao of the unity of Telugu-speaking people. He said he cannot countenance the division of the Telugu-speaking people. Harikrishna had made a fiery speech in the Rajya Sabha in Telugu, opposing the division of Andhra Pradesh.

In his brief resignation letter, Harkrishna said, “I, Dr Nandamuri Harikrishna, hereby tender my resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha for personal reasons. My resignation may kindly be accepted with immediate effect.”

After his resignation was accepted, a beaming Harikrishna said he was committed to the ideals espoused by his late father N T Rama Rao. Asked if he would embark on a Rath Yatra, he said whatever the people wanted, he would abide by their wish, but refused to elaborate on it.
