Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday said that the policemen were experiencing tremendous pressure because of the new challenges being forced on them at work for the last three years.

Speaking on the Police Commemoration Day observed at Goshamahal police stadium here on Monday, he felt that there was a significant change in nature of duties of policemen compared to policing by previous generations. “In tackling various movements in society, police personnel are going through tremendous psychological stress. But government is committed to relieve them of the pressure mounting on them besides shouldering the task of taking care of their health,” he said.

He claimed that around 25 per cent of additional forces were recruited in order to reduce the workload.

“Around 28,000 constables, 2,400 sub-inspectors and 120 DSPs were recruited as part of measures to decrease the burden on policemen,” he stated.

Assuring nod for different proposals made by Director General of Police, B Prasada Rao, he said that the government would sanction required funds for construction of quarters and take appropriate steps for the police to lead a dignified life in the society.

Lauding efforts of the cops, he said, “Police department would be in focus even in case of minor lapses. The police are expected to be above all the narrow considerations.”

Stating that Andhra Pradesh police was considered to be one of the top law enforcing agencies in the country, he urged the police personnel to carry forward credibility to the future generations. Comparing Indian army to police, he said, “Soldier can identify their enemies, but for policemen, it is hard task to be aware of their opponents.

They have enemies in the latent form. Police have enemies not only from neighboring States, but also from countries.”

He stressed on the importance of having coordination between state police and security agencies of adjacent States while tackling crime.

Earlier, Governor ESL Narasimhan paid tributes to martyrs of the department. Eight different battalions of the city took part in parade carried out on the occasion of the Commemoration Day. Higher authorities of the department took part in the programme.
