The Congress high command is gearing up to meet any eventuality in the event of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy refusing to toe the party line when the draft bill on Telangana is sent to the State Assembly.
According to party sources, AICC General Secretary in charge of AP affairs Digvijay Singh has been tasked with the job of weaning away as many ministers as possible from Kiran and see that he gets isolated. This is being done to contain any damage to the party in case Kiran decides to launch his own party, they said.
After Digvijay identifies those who are planning to quit party, the high command would hold talks with them and convince them against doing so. The high command has already succeeded in distancing some ministers like Kondru Murali and P Balaraju from the Chief Minister.
According to a senior minister, the meeting of Governor ESL Narasimhan with AICC President Sonia Gandhi and Digvijay Singh assumes importance in this context. It may be mentioned here that Digvijay called Kiran over phone on Saturday and sought an explanation as to what prompted him to write letters to President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
According to informed sources, the Union Minister for textiles Kavuri Sambasiva Rao had a one-on-one meeting with the Governor when the latter was in Delhi recently.
This has sparked off speculation in Congress circles that Kavuri may replace Kiran in case he refuses to cooperate with the process of bifurcation. Sources further said that the Ministers for Agriculture and Revenue K Laksminarayana and N Raghuveera Reddy called on Digvijay on Saturday and discussed the political situation in the State.
The AICC general secretary was also apprised of the proposed Rachabanda programme to be taken up by the Chief Minister from November 6.
