Many trains have been held up, cut short or diverted in East Godavari district in view of submergence of several tracks due to heavy rains in the past four days. With water overflowing tracks at Yelamanchili even late on Sunday evening, the Yaswantpur Express was detained. It will be sent to Vijayawada once the situation improves.

The Godavari Express has been stopped at Pithapuram. The other trains that have been held up include Duranto Express (at Samarlakota), Raigad Passenger ( Bikkavolu) and Machilipatnam Passenger ( Anaparthy). The Kakinada-Vijayawada Fast Passenger and the Falaknuma-Garibrath Express have been stopped at Kakinada and Dwarampudi respectively.The Kakinada-Visakha Fast Passenger was stopped at Samarlakota and sent back to Kakinada.

Candidates’ woes

The Godavari Express from Hyderabad was stopped at Pitapuram Railway Station and the Yeswant h a p u r - B h u v a n e swa r Express was stranded at Tuni station. The passengers of both the trains included some 700 candidates who lost their chance to take the written examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC), Bhuvaneswar, in Visakhapatnam. In addition, there are other candidates who had taken Godavari Express to write Bank tests and Group IV exams at Visakhapatnam. They all are stuck in Pithapuram. They urged the authorities to cancel the exams.

The Additional Railway Manager said that Visakha Express was stopped at Tuni and Tirumala, while Garibrath were diverted from Rajahmundry station. He also said that trains coming from Howrah, Bhubaneswar and Gowhati had been diverted via Nagpur to Chennai, Trivandrum and New Delhi.The Janmabhoomi Express was stated to be running eight hours late. The Konark and Garib Rath Express trains were stopped at Bikkavavolu and Dwarapudi Railway Stations within the Anaparthi constituency in East Godavari district on Sunday
