In a heart-wrenching incident, a woman who was unable to meet the treatment costs of her 45-day-old male child allegedly dumped the baby boy in a water barrel and killed him when her husband was away. The incident happened in Malakpet area on Sunday night.

The couple, J Bhaskar Naik and J Vijaya, residing in SBI Colony of Moosarambagh, was eking out a living by running a tea stall. Their happiness knew no bounds when they were blessed with a child. But soon, their happiness turned into misery as the baby was diagnosed with a heart disease. The couple, Vijaya particularly, was completely traumatized over the plight of their child. The couple left no stone unturned to get medical care for the child. They spent around Rs 1 lakh for the treatment. The child was referred to Niloufer Hospital for treatment. As the infant failed to respond to the treatment, it was brought home.

Driven to desperation by their poverty and mental agony at the sight of her suffering child, the mother allegedly took the drastic step of ending the child’s life, apparently to end its misery as well as theirs.

According to Malakpet police, Vijaya was alone at her home on Sunday when she allegedly drowned the baby in a water barrel thus causing his instantaneous death. On receipt of information, police reached the spot and shifted the body to the Osmania General Hospital for autopsy. A case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered against Vijaya. Further investigation is on.
