Telugu Desam Party supremo N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday resorted to a dharna suddenly on the road at Perumalla Puram in Thondangi mandal of East Godavari district, demanding that none but the district collector should give him assurances regarding clearing water from inundated villages, paying appropriate compensation to flood-hit people, and providing food for the victims.
When Peddapuram RDO offered to deputise for the East Godavari District Collector Neetu Prasad (who was then in Sakhineti Palli), the TDP president insisted that he would continue the dharna till the district collector responded to his demands. During his protest, Naidu demanded that 50 kg rice and five litres of kerosene should be given to each affected family, apart from Rs 5,000 for each family towards purchase of essential commodities. He further demanded payment of Rs 10,000 each for substantially damaged houses and Rs 5,000 for partially damaged houses. His demands included payment of compensation at the rate of Rs 25,000 per hectare of paddy, Rs 50,000 per hectare of commercials crops.
Although Peddapuram RDO Shankar Vara Prasad gave Naidu an assurance that steps would be taken to help the victims, Naidu warned that he would resume dharna at the same place if the district machinery failed to meet his demands by Wednesday.
