The district police on Thursday stopped the honorary president of YSR Congress party, YS Vijayamma,at Painampalli the border village of Nalgonda district when she was entering the district after completing her visit in Khammam district.
It may be recalled that Ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Jana Reddy made it clear on Wednesday that Vijayamma did not console the parents of the students who died for Telangana in the past.
YSR Congress Huzurnagar in-charge Srikanth Reddy made arrangements for her visit to call on the farmers of Dondapadu village in Mellacheruvu mandal. The TJAC members and Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy took this as a challenge warned that they would stop her convoy.
The Telangana activists set ablaze eight statues of former chief minister Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy in Kodada, Chilukuru, Nareducharla, Garidepalli, Huzurnagar, Mellacheruvu in the district.
The police as a precautionary measure imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Kodada and Huzurnagar. Following the call given by TJAC, the activists burnt down the YSR Congress party flags and effigies in Huzurnagar.
In both the Assembly segments, the followers of the minister, Congress activists, TRS leaders and TJAC workers were ready to wave black flags throughout the road of the journey of YSR Congress leader.
The police, sensing danger, stopped the convoy of Vijayamma on the border of the district and shifted her to Nelakondapalli in Khammam district.
Later, the police escorted the convoy towards Hyderabad via Suryapet. However, the Telangana activists waylaid, at Suryapet and threw eggs and stones at the convoy. The police quickly dispersed the mob and escorted the convoy to Hyderabad.
At Kodada, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy addressing media persons said that the Congress leaders had still great respect for Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy and we even respect his family. However, the people would not tolerate if they tour Telangana against the formation of the State he said.
YSR statues vandalised
In what could be described as rejection of the visit of YSR Congress honorary president YS Vijayamma to the cyclone-affected areas in the district, a series of attacks took place on the statues of former chief minister Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy by some unidentified persons who vandalised them in at least three villages in the early hours of Thursday.
The statue of the late chief Minister was set ablaze in Gudibanda village of Kodada mandal in the early hours of Thursday. Another statue in the limits of Kodada town was also partially destroyed.
Likewise, a statue on Revuru road in Mellacheruvu and another statue in Dondapadu in Nalgonda mandal were set ablaze by some unidentified persons.
Both the TRS and the Congress party vowed not to allow Vijayamma to set her foot in Telangana.
