CAT notice to govt on ex-DGP’s plea

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday finalised the name of B Prasada Rao as the Director-General of Police. The State government would soon issue orders to this effect.

At present, Prasada Rao has been holding the post as in-charge DGP with full responsibility as the government could not complete the selection process before the retirement of former DGP V Dinesh Reddy, who went to court challenging the State government’s decision to deny him an extension. Prasada Rao’s candidature was finalised after scrutinising the six-member list sent by the State government.

The State government had sent the names of TP Das, Aruna Bahuguna, Syed Anwarul Huda, B Prasada Rao, J V Ramudu and A K Khan to the UPSC for selection of the DGP. Meanwhile, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) sought an explanation from the State government over the former DGP Dinesh Reddy’s petition to strike off the appointment of Prasada Rao as in-charge DGP.

The DGP pleaded with the CAT to strike off the notification which had directed him to retire from service, stating that he had attained superannuation age on September 30.
