PM Orders Release of Funds to AP, Funds for Andhra Pradesh Flood Relief. Venkaiah Naidu informed the Prime Minister that Andhra Pradesh was struck by three cyclones in as many months – Phailin, Helen and Lehar.
BJP delegation apprises him of losses due to cyclones
New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday directed his officials to expedite release of funds for Andhra Pradesh flood relief. This was conveyed to the BJP delegation led by former BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu, who informed the Prime Minister that despite his decision to release Rs 1,000 crore each to Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, funds have not been released so far. A surprised Prime Minister asked the officials why there was no compliance of his orders and said the release of funds should be expedited.
Venkaiah Naidu informed the Prime Minister that Andhra Pradesh was struck by three cyclones in as many months – Phailin, Helen and Lehar. Venkaiah Naidu while Andhra Pradesh suffered losses to the tune of Rs 45,000 crore in the last 10 years on account of natural calamities and that as against the State’s request for financial help of Rs 44,900 crore, the Centre released only Rs 2540.27 crore, which is just 5 per cent of the total amount sought.
The BJP delegation led by Venkaiah Naidu comprised of Andhra Pradesh BJP President G Kishen Reddy, besides BJP Odisha leaders like BJP General Secretary Dharmendra Pradhan, former Union Minister Jual Oram and former Odisha Minister Manmohan Samal. The delegation also requested the Prime Minister to visit Andhra Pradesh and Odisha even now to understand the gravity of the situation. The Prime Minister said he wanted to go but due to unforeseen developments he could not do so and that he would try to go now. The delegation requested the Prime Minister that the Centre should be liberal in giving assistance to the States, because the States cannot deal with a devastation of such huge magnitude with their limited resources.
