New Delhi: The Union Ministers from Seemandhra region on Wednesday called on Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram to insist on the Union Territory status for Hyderabad.
Although all the Union Ministers from Seemandhra are of the unanimous opinion on UT status for Hyderabad, they also made it clear that they are looking for a face-saver to give up their insistence on keeping Andhra Pradesh united and agreeing to the creation of Telangana.
The Seemandhra delegation comprised HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju, Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi, Minister of State for Finance J D Seelam, Minister of State for Railways Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy, Minister of State for Petroleum Panabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Commerce D Purandeshwari and Minister of State for Telecom Killi Krupa Rani.
Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi insisted that the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) area of Hyderabad should be accorded UT status on a permanent basis, as that is the only enduring solution to the problem. There could be no compromise on the demand, he said.
Chiranjeevi differed with Seelam, who favoured UT status for Hyderabad only during the duration of the city serving as a common capital. For his part, Chiranjeevi said he believed that since Hyderabad belonged to all the Telugu people, it should retain such a character. He said since there was no point in talking of united Andhra Pradesh when bifurcation wass inevitable, what was important was to press for UT status for Hyderabad.
Seelam said he favoured UT status only during the period when Hyderabad serves as the common capital. Among other things he insisted upon is that Seemandhra should be given a Railway Zonal Division, Super-Speciality Hospital, educational and employment avenues and all the facilities and infrastructure available in Hyderabad, so that the Seemandhra region would not lag behind.
D Purandeshwari said there was a need for decentralisation of power and development. All areas of the Seemandhra region should be equally developed, in order to avoid a situation like the present, so that similar statehood demand should not arise in future.
