Seemandhra Leaders Make Last-Ditch Bid, Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The main decision taken at the meeting was that both Textiles Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao and HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju should articulate their demand forcefully in the Union Cabinet meeting.

But, their demand for UT status to Hyd falls on deaf ears

New Delhi: In a last-ditch attempt, Union Ministers from Seemandhra region sought to mount pressure on the Congress-led UPA Government to concede their demand for Union Territory status to Hyderabad. The Seemandhra leaders are worried that otherwise, it would be difficult for them even to go back to their constituencies.

At a luncheon meeting at Textiles Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao residence, the Union Ministers from Seemandhra region gathered to plan their strategy on how to press for UT status for Hyderabad. Besides Textiles Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, those present in the meeting included HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju, Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi, Minister of State for Finance J D Seelam, Minister of State for Commerce D Purandeshwari and Minister of State for Telecom Killi Kripa Rani. Besides, senior Congress MPs L Rajagopal and Vundavalli Arun Kumar were also present.

The main decision taken at the meeting was that both Textiles Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao and HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju should articulate their demand forcefully in the Union Cabinet meeting.

The Union Ministers from Seemandhra had initially raised the banner of revolt against the Congress High Command decision on bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. After the Union Cabinet decision on October 3 to create Telangana, the Union Ministers had also tendered their resignations.

Progressively, they relented on resignations. At the sametime, the Union Ministers have been pleading with the Government for a face-saving way out for them. It was in this context that they have decided on pressing for UT status for Hyderabad as a sop, which could quell the protests rocking the Seemandhra region.

To assuage the hurt feelings of the Union Ministers, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had set up Antony Committee to address the concerns of the people of the Seemandhra region. However, Antony Committee findings did not see the light of the day, as the Congress High Command did not seem to be serious on pursuing the matter.

The Union Ministers from the Seemandhra region had constantly been meeting the GoM on Telangana. The experience was hardly encouraging, as the GoM was completely dismissive of the concerns of the people of Seemandhra region. The GoM did not even take care to hide its plans to press ahead with the decision on creation of Telangana, without taking care to address the concerns of the people of Seemandhra region.
