Fire mishaps on trains, buses in 2013

2013 has been a year of fire mishaps. Sadly, most of them have taken place in Andhra Pradesh with several people from the state losing their lives. While some fire accidents have been blamed on short circuits, a majority of them have been due to the negligence of transport authorities. We have reached a stage where the public fear travel by any mode of transport. Let's take a look at some of the fire accidents on public transport services in the recent times.
Fire Accidents on Trains, Buses in 2013
  • May 21, 2013: At least 25 people were killed and over 30 were injured when Bangalore-bound Hampi Express collided with a goods train in Andhra Pradesh. The mishap occurred around 3:15 am when the Hampi Express, travelling from Hubli to Bangalore, rammed a stationary goods train near Penukonda station in Anantapur district. As a result of the collision, two coaches of the Hampi Express derailed and caught fire.
  • On May 29 this year, fire broke out in the S-8 compartment of AP Express which was travelling from New Delhi to Hyderabad. The accident occured near Nagpur. Alert passengers pulled the train to a stop and fire extinguishers pressed into service. Fortunately, nobody was injured.
  • On October 15, A pantry car of the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express caught fire between the Dharamtul and Sonuabari stations in the Lumding-Guwahati section of the Lumding Division of Northeast Frontier Railway around 4.15 a.m. on Tuesday. No casualty or injuries were reported. However, the enture coach was gutted on fire. The train was bound for Delhi.
  • October 30: In one of the worst tragedies in recent times, a private luxury bus travelling from Bengaluru to Hyderabad burst into flames at Juverla village in Kothakota mandal in Mahbubnagar district, about 130 km from here. Forty-five of the 51 passengers including a baby girl perished in the mishap and seven others suffered burns. They were fast asleep and most of them were going home for Diwali festival. The Volvo semi sleeper bus AP 02 PA 0963 registered with Diwakar Travels but operated by Jabbar Travels was engulfed in flames incinerating the passengers.
  • On November 15, Seven persons were burnt to death and 40 others got injured, six critically, when a Mumbai-bound bus from Bengaluru went up in flames after hitting a road median.The air-conditioned multi-axle Volvo bus with 51 passengers on board had left Bengaluru on Wednesday night and met with the tragedy around 2.30 am near Kunimeli bridge. Most of the bus passengers escaped by jumping out through the emergency exit, police said.
  • Christmas turned out to be tragic for some passengers when the AP tourism luxury bus they were travelling in caught fire near Trimulgherry in Secunderabad. While most of the passengers escaped unhurt, a few of them suffered minor injuries.
