Medaram: With the historic Sammakka Saralamma Jatara set to begin on Wednesday all roads are leading to this sleepy village set amidst lush green hillocks in Tadwai mandal in the district.

For four days from February 12 to 15 the village located 110kms away from the district head quarters, virtually turns into a sea of humanity with a cosmopolitan bearing because devout come from different parts of the country, cultures, languages and traditions.

About 1.30 crore devotees are expected to visit Medaram and 25 lakh devotees are already in town.

Though non-tribals too make a part of the devotees, the jatra is mainly a tribal festival where the deities Sammakka and Saralamma will be venerated by tribals from across Andhra Pradesh, neighbouring Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

The jatra is said to be unique in nature in the entire world as crores of people congregate at one place. They gather with the objective of offering their thanksgivings to the legendary Koya tribal warriors Sammakka and Sarakka who attained martyrdom fighting the imperial armies of the Kakatiya monarch Pratapa Rudra II eight hundred ago. The main event of the jatra begins with the arrival of Saralamma, is brought from Kannepalli village.

On the second day, Sammakka will be brought from the sacred hillock of Chilukalagutta. The third is dedicated for offering while on the fourth day the deities will be taken back to their original places by the tribal priests.

The task of bringing the deities will be assigned to tribal priests in accordance with the tradition. This time Kokkera Krishnaiah will bring the deity Sammakka while Kaka Saraiah will bring Saralamma.
