Medaram (Warangal): The biennial Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara has begun here on Wednesday.

After hours of traditional and ritualistic prayers at Saralamma temple situated at Kannepalli village, the deity was brought to the main place of worship at Medaram by a group of tribal priests and district officials.

Hundreds of devotees, some prostrating on the ground and some standing in awe by the side road, welcomed the deity who embarked the journey towards Medaram. The local villagers too offered prayers as the deity moved on.

When the priest, carrying the deity, comes out of the temple the devotees prostrated allowing the priest to stamp on them. This act of obeisance is believed to invoke much needed benevolence to the devotees from the goddess.

Thousands of devotees moved along with the priests all through the four kilometre stretch from Kannepalli to Medaram escorting the deity across the Jampannavagu into Medaram village to the Saralamma Gadde (altar).

On the day, the deities Nagulamma and Govindaraju from Kondai in Eturunagaram mandal and Pagididdaraju from Punugondla in Kothaguda mandal are also brought to Medaram by the tribal priests. Ahead of all, the deity Laxmi Devara arrived at the temple precincts.

Prior to having darshan of the deity, the devotees take holy dip in the Jampannavagu believing that a dip in the rivulet heals all their diseases. The rivulet is basically called Sampengavagu and is named after Sammakka’s son Jampanna, who jumped into the rivulet while fighting the Kakatiya army.

The place around the Gaddelu is jam-packed and the devotees pushed their way towards the shrine. The influx of pilgrims into Medaram surged on Wednesday late evening hours as the devotees intended to witness arrival of the deity Sammakka on Thursday. The moments when both the deities are consecrated on the altar are considered sacred. Mulugu MLA Seetakka overcome by emotion and devotion danced at Kannepalli as the deity Saralamma was brought out of the temple.

District Collector G Kishan, Joint Collector Pausumi Basu, APNPDCL chairman and managing director Kartikeya Misra, ITDA projector director B Sanjeevaih, DMHO Dr. P Sambasiva Rao and others were present.
