New Delhi: The principal Opposition party, the BJP was taken unawares when the Telangana Bill was moved for consideration and passing in the Lok Sabha. All along, the BJP was of the view that the UPA government would not press for the passage of the Bill after moving it in the House, as it would be unable to pass it in the din.

After the Bill was moved by Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and the government insisted for its passage amid the din in the House, the BJP was left with no option but to vote for the Bill. Amid the pandemonium, clause by clause voting was taken-up, much to the surprise of the BJP satraps.

After the Bill was passed, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj admitted that Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath was accusing them of playing double-game. The BJP did not want to be seen to be opposing the Bill as the Minister would have blamed the party again for deserting the Bill. When asked for the reason for not pressing for amendments, she said that they held the view that the Bill was not introduced in the House but later they had to abide by the ruling of the Speaker.

In fact, in the House, BJP was unsure of the stand to be taken as it was caught unawares. There were several instances, when the BJP members did not know whether or not to stand up during the head-count. The back-benchers of the BJP were seen asking members on the front rows on the stand to be taken on several of the amendments moved by the Home Minister. As an after-thought and a strategy that was evolved in a meeting of the senior leaders at Advani's chamber that the BJP came out with an explanation that they will move the amendments and press for division in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday when the Bill would come up for discussion. The BJP, which played the role of a silent spectator, would be seen in a much active role in the Upper House on Wednesday. Sushma Swaraj informed that they had suggested several amendments to the government. Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had agreed to carry out the amendment to transfer the mandal that comes under the submergence areas in Bhadrachalam to Seemandhra but failed to do so in the Cabinet meeting. She said that few concerns of the party were met but there were others which were ignored by the government.

Led by Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley and leaders like Ravi Shankar Prasad and M Venkaiah Naidu, the BJP is all set to embarrass the UPA government on the legal infirmities in the Telangana Bill.
