Plea to make May 16 as the Appointed Day

Hyderabad: The vacation bench of the AP High Court comprising Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice N Satyanarayana Murthy in an extraordinary sitting issued directions to the Central Government to consider advisability of advancing the Appointed Day for formation of the new State of Telangana from June 2 to May 16.

The bench was dealing with a writ petition filed by Jagdeesh Reddy, a politburo member of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). It is the case of the petitioner that with election results due to be available by May 16, the new State would not be formed before June 2. Senior counsel K Ramakrishna Reddy appearing for the petitioner said that the results would be announced on May 16 but the new State will come into existence only on June 2 as per the notification issued by the Union Government. There will be no popular governments till June 2 though the list of new legislatures will be ready by May 16.

Vishnuvardhan Reddy, the Assistant Solicitor-General, informed the bench that the date for a separate state was fixed after proper consideration and it was improper for the petitioner to ask for an advancement of the date. The bench found it improper to direct the Union Government to change the date, but directed it to consider the advisability of such a change.
