Hyderabad: Telangana Government to Scrap ArogyasriHyderabad: The Telangana government will soon go in for a thorough ‘overhaul’ of the much touted health scheme Arogyasri, initiated by the Congress government.

Stating this, Deputy Chief Minister T Rajaiah, who is also holding the portfolio of Medical and Health, told The Hans India on Wednesday that the government was determined to put an end to corrupt practices being indulged in by corporate hospitals while implementing the scheme. He said the government would first initiate action against all such institutions and come up with a new health scheme for the poor.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that the government would also take a call on the existing system of government doctors working in private hospitals as consultants. This was resulting in the government doctors referring the patients to private hospitals to which they were associated with.

Rajaiah said the government would ensure that basic medical services at government hospitals were provided. “Even after that, if the doctors refer the cases to private hospitals without any valid reason ,then the government would take severe action against them.

He was also disturbed by the utter neglect the government hospitals had been subjected to so far. According to him, even the major government hospitals like Gandhi and Osmania were ‘ridden with bed bugs,’ shortage of staff & medicines and lack of other facilities. Rajaih assured that that the entire medical system would be overhauled and see that the doctors give better services. Measures would be taken to improve the condition of these hospitals shortly.

According to him, the Telangana region lost medical and ayurvedic seats due to neglect of the earlier governments. The seats that should have come to the colleges in Telangana had gone to the Seemandhra region, he added. The minister said that the doctors should be more responsible. In India, doctors were considered next to God. He said the Telangana government would ensure that dedicated government doctors got due recognition.
