Upset over denial of Cabinet berth?

Vijayawada: Senior Telugu Desam leader and former Government Whip Kagita Venkata Rao suffered a mild cardiac arrest on Monday in his native town Malleswaram of Pedana Assembly constituency, in Krishna district. He was rushed to a private hospital here by his supporters.

Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, several senior party leaders visited him in the hospital. Rao spoke to the cardiologist on his health status. Doctors told the leaders that they require about 12 hours to assess his condition.

Venkata Rao, a three-time legislator, expected a Cabinet berth after his victory from Pedana in the just-concluded elections, defeating Buragadda Vedavyas of YSRCP. Though he aspired to become a minister after his election in 1999, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu had made him the Government Whip, promising a fair deal later. Now that he won the election and the party came to power, Rao, representing the backward Gowda community, expected a phone call from Naidu till the last minute on June 8.

Upset over denial of the Cabinet berth, he stayed home all through the day without attending the swearing-in. His supporters said he did not even speak with them during their protest in Pedana.
